Installing Garmin Mobile XT into your Symbian S60 phones

Hi guys, i've always wanted to write this up, based on my experience with my Nokia 5800 XM but never really bothered to put down my resolve to do this. So finally i did it today, after so long... here you go.

First of all, let's get all these files downloaded into your computer:

a. The license key generator HERE

b. Garmin Mobile XT for Symbian S60 3rd Edition HERE

c. Garmin Mobile XT Free Basemap HERE

d. Garmin Mobile XT Support Files HERE

e. Malaysian map from MFM site HERE
p.s. Look for the thread titled "Free Malaysia & Singapore GPS Map: MFM-Garmin...". ppl there are quite friendly if you need advice on how to generate the map file, but i'd say it's pretty easy.

Now you should have these files in your pc:
==============================
GarminMobileXTforSymbianS603rdEdition_50050.exe
GarminMobileXTFreeBasemap_4xxxx.exe
GarminMobileXTSupportFiles_4xxxx.exe
gmapsupp.img (the one you've just downloaded from malfreemaps)
garmin_kgen.exe
=======================================

Below are the steps to install Garmin Mobile XT into your phone.

1) Plug the usb cable into your phone and PC, let the pc detect your phone and choose "Mass storage mode" from your phone.
*IMPORTANT* You must have a memory card installed in your phone.

2) From you PC, double click GarminMobileXTforSymbianS603rdEdition_50050.exe” to install and wait.

**Select the removable drive which is your phone when prompted. It could be E:/ or F:/ or G:, depending on your pc la... but it usually show only one option.

3) Double click “GarminMobileXTFreeBasemap_4xxxx.exe” to install. Repeat the same process as ** above.

4) Double click “GarminMobileXTSupportFiles_4xxxx.exe” to install. Repeat the same process as ** above.

5) Disconnect your phone after the above was done.

6) Get to your phone, open menu -> Apps and you'll see "GMobileXT". Open the app.

7) Select "Free Trial",
Click on the "spanner" icon,
then select "settings" and
then go down to "About".
You will see a string of numbers under "Card ID". Copy down your "Card ID" number somewhere, maybe into Word or Notepad.
Then exit from the app and return your phone to standby mode.

8) Click on the "garmin_kgen.exe" and enter the “Card ID” from previous step.

9) Generate it and you will get a string of codes. Copy the codes to Notepad and save as “sw.unl”. *Be sure you don’t save it as sw.unl.txt”*

10) Once completed the above, reconnect your phone to your PC and select "Mass Storage mode". Go to "My Computer", double click to access the "Removable Drive" (your phone) and look for the folder titled "Garmin".

11) Copy the “sw.unl” file and the "gmapsupp.img" file, and paste into this folder.

12) Once done, close off everything, disconnect your phone from PC and if you want, you may restart your phone. No harm even if you don't.

13) Now walk outside to the clear sky, open the GMobileXT app and wait for the satellite signal capture, indicated by the green color bars on top of the app. Once the satellite signal is captured (green colour signal bar), click on "View Map" and it will show you your location.

14) After that, have some fun exploring the app functions and menus. I can only help you out this far. Anything more, Mr Google is your friend.

Just a reminder, if you're doing address search, never ever key-in symbols such as "-", "/", "." or any other symbols lah... just normal abc and 123 or else your device will hang and you have no choice but to unplug the battery to restart. It's a bug that Garmin choose not to fix because they stopped providing support for this app after they teamed up with Asus to make Nuvifone, and also because of ppl like us all, who wanted free stuffs and not paying them their license fee.

Have fun!
